Chapter 20

June

The weather cleared up the next day, bringing sun and warmer temperatures to Pickering for the next week. Today was just such a day, so Jed took Pup for a walk in the woods behind town so she could chase the birds and squirrels for a little exercise. Wade sat in his chair in front of the jailhouse, enjoying the warm afternoon, watching wagons and riders making their way up and down the street. The town was busy with women shoppers and children running and playing childish games, and on occasion, he had to shoo them out of the street. Having just done so, he smiled at the giggles and laughter from the children as they ran away from him, and he thought of his son Emmett.

Morgan and Katherine Jordan drove by in a buggy returning from their Saturday ride that had become a weekly outing. Morgan waved as they drove by, Wade tipped his hat to Katherine, and she nodded and smiled back. He watched them with envy thinking of Sarah as the buggy turned from the main street onto the street toward Katherine’s house. Overtaken with loneliness, he turned away and stared toward the south and Colorado, wondering what his family was doing this very moment.

The sound of the stage arriving from Miles City was a welcome rescue from his thoughts of Sarah and the loneliness of his life. He watched as the stage drove past, chased by a small cloud of dust, and wondered about its occupants. The driver pulled at the reins and pushed the brake with his left foot stopping the stage in front of the Pickering Stage Depot. As the street dust caught up with the stage, the depot manager hurried out to open the stage door then step back as he greeted the travelers.

A middle-aged man climbed out, turned, and helped a young girl in her early teens step down to the boardwalk. A slightly younger man and woman having the appearance of farmers greeted both with hugs. Wade watched, thinking how happy everyone seemed to be as they smiled while everyone talked at the same time. Gathering their baggage, the four walked to a waiting wagon, put the baggage in the back, then climbed up onto a crowded seat and drove out of town.

The stage driver had stepped down, holding a large leather bag Wade knew was full of mail from the post office in Miles City and probably a new supply of wanted posters. The driver handed the bag to Harry, the depot manager, while a young teamster climbed up onto the driver’s seat, released the brake, and drove the stage around back for a fresh team of horses. Lowering the chair's front legs to the boardwalk, Wade took his feet off the post, stood, then adjusted his holster that set across his left side. He started walking along the boardwalk toward the Stage Depot, hoping he didn’t find a poster with his name on it in the leather bag. He smiled at the depot manager.
